A Career In Public Transport

My career in the bus industry began while I was still at school, where I gained valuable work experience at the Stagecoach depot in Dunfermline and subsequently at the Fife head office in Kirkcaldy.

After completing my studies in Transport Management at the University of Northumbria (formerly Newcastle Polytechnic), I joined Stagecoach Bluebird in the North East of Scotland as a Management Trainee based in Elgin, later advancing to Assistant Manager in Aberdeen.

Bluebird was performing exceptionally well, providing me with an excellent environment to develop expertise in operations management and commercial planning across both rural and urban service locations.

I subsequently transitioned to First Bus, assuming a newly established area manager position covering the former Lowland business in the Scottish Borders. This role involved significant staff and stakeholder management responsibilities during a period of structural change within the organisation and entailed managing rural operations with tight financial constraints.

My move into local government with Falkirk Council’s Public Transport Team offered a fresh perspective on the industry. Leveraging my skills, I contributed to efficiency savings and service improvements on tendered and school transport services. I also focused on enhancing public transport information standards and collaborated with commercial operators on bus route development projects.

Returning to the operating sector, I took on a multifaceted role with Preston Bus in the northwest of England. As part of a relatively small, employee-owned company in an urban setting, I led initiatives in network design, timetabling, scheduling, marketing, operations management, and restructuring of both frontline management and customer services, all against a backdrop of intense competition.

Following the sale of Preston Bus, I joined Transdev Blazefield, initially as Project Manager and later as Business Director overseeing Burley & Pendle and, subsequently, the Blackburn operations in Lancashire. Managing all aspects of the business including operations, engineering, commercial planning, marketing, and stakeholder engagement.

Responsible for such iconic brands as the Witch Way, connecting East Lancashire and Manchester. My leadership facilitated network expansion, internal restructuring, and significant financial growth, particularly for the Blackburn operation.

As Commercial Director at Transdev Blazefield, I directed business activities across Lancashire, North and West Yorkshire, successfully generating growth through partnerships with local colleges and expanding into new geographic areas by securing contracted work.

In 2015, I returned north to join Stagecoach East Scotland as Commercial Director. Leading on network planning, pricing strategies, partnerships, and overseeing marketing and customer services. Also working closely in the development of public transport infrastructure around the Queensferry Crossing.

Promoted to Managing Director of Stagecoach East Scotland in 2019, the company I had worked with whilst at school. Assuming responsibility for a workforce of up to 1,300 staff, approximately 500 vehicles, and annual revenues of £100M+.

Leading through the pandemic and then the long rebuild focusing on restoring passenger confidence, improving reliability, focusing on changing demand, simplifying fares and reducing staff turnover. All of which contributed to growth in demand amongst all markets.
